Libraries were originally created to organize documents for easy accessibility. Ancient libraries collected tablets and scrolls, most times for the personal use of royalty. Libraries were not available for the general public.
As word was spread about libraries and information, scholars from everywhere visited royal, private and monastery libraries. They read and copies information so that information could be shared. As libraries grew, more people became educated.
The growth and modernization of libraries caused libraries to become more of lending libraries. Materials could be utilized through subscriptions and memberships. This means only the rich and educated could access information and books. Advocates for education and knowledge made known the importance of reading and information. This lead to libraries becoming lending libraries. Patrons could access information and books through card catalogues. They could locate books themselves or with the help of librarians.
As libraries became contemporary, books and information could be accessed through traveling libraries or bookmobiles. Technology has moved libraries into the digital era. Catalogs are now on electronic databases. Computers are used daily in libraries. Libraries are now using more than just service through computers. They offer information and knowledge through many electronic devices. Information and knowledge can be accessed at the library, at home, or on the go.
